Problems with cloudy water? Drain your spa!

A lot of different factors can contribute to water clarity. We will be sharing some tips we've learned over the years with you over the next few articles. We're confident that following a few simple steps will ensure you have sparkling clear water all the time!

First, let's start with the basics:

When is the last time you drained your spa?
Spa water should be drained about every 3-4 months, but there is always a chance your spa will need to be drained more often. Consider how often your hot tub is used. In the spa world, "high use" of a hot tub is considered 2 or more people, 3+ times a week. (And 2 people in a spa is like having 30 people in a pool!)

Also keep in mind that an average person produces 1 pt of sweat per hour in a hot tub. Consider 2 people using the tub for 1 hour, 3 times a week= 6 pts of sweat, 24 pts per month. etc. etc. You get the picture- eventually you're not really soaking in water- ew! So, it's best for water clarity to drain the spa at least every 3-4 months!

We seem to struggle with a white precipitant in our hot tub despite assuring the right pH. We have hard water and do need to use pH decreasers occasionally. We empty/change water at least every 2months and are a 1-2 person/1-2 times a week user. Thoughts?

Dear Anonymous,

Without seeing your water, this is just a guess- but I'm wondering if the white precipitant you are seeing in your water is calcium flakes? You mentioned you have hard water, so that's what is making me guess that.
Unfortunately, there isn't a chemical to decrease hard water, but there is a maintenance product called "Metal control" that you could try. You might also think about filling your water 1/3-1/2 way with your water softener on (if you have one).

To get a better idea on what is going on with your spa, if you're local to one of our 3 locations, I'd suggest bringing a water sample in for us to test.

Hope this helps!

My issue is with the brown ring I get around the tub from the bauqua (spelling) I think it is the waterline control chemical. After a couple of months the ring comes back faster and faster even though I do not add any more of the waterline control. The only way I can get the film off is with denatured alcohol (works wonders!!!). Then I empty tub and start over. The tub does not get a lot of use.

A brown ring is really common with BaquaSpa and there is a good reason for it- we talk about it on this post here:
